Regulate the Body First

This sounds too simple to matter, but it’s the foundation. Your nervous system state is bidirectional—your mental state affects your body, but your body state affects your mind more powerfully. You can’t think your way out of threat-detection mode, but you can shift your physiological state in ways that make different thoughts possible.

Extended exhale breathing. Making your exhale longer than your inhale directly activates parasympathetic response. This isn’t a relaxation technique—it’s a physiological signal to your autonomic nervous system that threat has passed. Inhale for 4 counts, exhale for 8. Done consistently, it begins to shift the baseline.

Be specific: “Critical production issue affecting customers” qualifies. “Someone wants a quick answer” doesn’t. When the categories are clear, your brain doesn’t have to maintain constant surveillance.

Here’s what I’ve observed across years of working with founders and executives: the ones who recover from always-on exhaustion aren’t the ones who learn to tolerate more cognitive load. They’re the ones who build businesses and lives that don’t require constant threat-monitoring to function.

That’s a longer project than any single intervention. It involves delegation, team development, systems that create visibility without constant surveillance, and sometimes hard conversations about what’s actually sustainable.
